Yes, it's been a very long time since my last post. I had a huge setback with the sensors several months ago and little time to fix them. But when I got a call from the City of Walnut asking me to provide laser tag for their Halloween Zombie Tag maze - I had to get the sensors working again. Thankfully this was a paid job, so I was able to find the time to bring the sensor back to life. BTW, here is a video of the walk through of the Zombie Tag event...

In my last post, I had built a reflow oven which will allow me to assemble several sensors at one time. Unfortunately, after populating 100 boards I had an 80% failure rate on all of my assembled sensors! AAARRRGGG!!! After all of that time - after all of that effort - after all of that money spent - an 80% failure rate on everything was a really tough blow to this project. I spent more time testing everything, but I couldn't figure out what went wrong. I had to put the project on hold.

Thankfully my pal Brian Farley came to my rescue and examined everything and came to the conclusion that the reflow process caused micro traces on the MCU that caused it to fail. So he came up with a solution that involved a lot of soldering and re-working each PCB board. It finally took me a month of work, but I was able to get 24 Zombie Sensors to work reliably for the City of Walnut Zombie Tag event. And after two evenings of heavy use, the sensors performed great! I had no failures and they functioned as intended.

So where do I go from here? I know a lot of people would like to purchase these sensors. I have parts to assemble several more. Unfortunately they will take a lot of time to get functioning properly and even more time to test to make sure all of the micro-traces are gone. If/when I sell them. I want to make sure they operate as intended. So until then, stay tuned!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801922720835440837.post-52392024469476848722015-04-20T11:51:00.004-07:002015-04-20T11:51:41.713-07:00Reflow Oven Assembled!I have found a good speaker replacement for the Zombie Sensor and hope to be making more soon. In the past, Dustin Westaby has graciously agreed to put these together. But unfortunatly he does not have the time to make any more. So I'll be taking on the task. Since some of the parts include tiny SMD parts, I've decided to construct my own Reflow Oven. I just finished the assembly today and it works great! For the reflow controls, I went with the Arduino based Rocket Scream Reflow Oven Controller. And here's some picts of the final project...

And what's nice about this oven is that I can toast me a nice grilled cheese sandwich as I reflow solder paste to my Zombie Sensors! I hope to be making these Zombie Sensor soon. Once they're ready, I'll be posting to this blog. (Sorry - grilled cheese sandwiches will not be for sale .)

Just a quick update on things. Regarding the Zombie Sensor; I have a lot of the parts to make more units, except for the speaker. The piezo speaker had been on backorder from Mouser for several months now. I've been trying to find a replacement, with no luck. The original part can be found HERE.

All of the replacement candidates tested are not as loud as the original part. The design of the original part is a bit different - and the video below shows what I'm up against.

If anyone has ideas on ways to solve this, please email me at "rwb134" using Google's fine e-mail service. I really want to get more of these made, especially so I can have them ready in time for TagFest 2015 this year. Keep your fingers crossed.
The NOMAD is making slow progress forward. Ryan "Izzy" Bales has been working with me on the new ARM processor. However he has just started work at the super awesome Shoot The Moon HQ and his time is very limited. I'm hoping to take over a lot of the coding work soon - but rest assured, we are making progress.

Thanks to everyone who has expressed their excitement and enthusiasm for the projects Dustin and I have been working on. The Zombie Sensor, NOMAD and the Echo Base are all projects we're committed to and extremely excited about.

Unfortunately the processor we have been working with, the Atmel ATmega328u (the one used in the popular Arduino Uno series) just doesn't have the horsepower and specs we need. The vision we have for everything is bigger than what this processor can handle.

In addition to this, my programming skills are not advance enough to keep moving us in the direction I'd like to go. The vision is pretty awesome, but getting there is going to require changes and more help.

As such, I'm happy to announce the newest member to the LT-MMO development group... Ryan "Izzy" Bales! Izzy is a long time Lazer Tag enthusiast and Software/Hardware genius. Ryan and I share the same vision for various "enhancements" we'd like to add to our favorite Hasbro Lazer Tag gear - it made sense for us to team up.

After much discussion with Izzy about the problems using the ATmega328u, for the NOMAD and Echo Base, we have decided to change the processor and move to the more robust ARM chip. There are many versions of the ARM out there, and we chose one has a similar price point tot he ATmega328u - so the final price of the NOMAD and Echo Base should not be affected.

The downside to this is that we are essentially starting over with our software code and the NOMAD and Echo Base projects will be delayed further. Izzy is currently writing various new libraries for the NOMAD that can be reused for the Echo Base. Once these libraries are finished, we can begin the actual main coding for these projects. While delays are a pain, we believe the end benefits will be worth it - especially if this means our products will run faster and more reliably than ever before.

There's a lot we want to accomplish with these gadgets, but we're taking everything one step at a time - so we appreciate your patience. Stay tuned. Exciting things are on the horizon!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801922720835440837.post-87885975201455983302014-11-18T02:20:00.002-08:002014-11-18T02:21:08.600-08:00Zombies Sensors - Sold Out!

Well that didn't take long! Our first batch of Zombie Sensors is now sold out - or at least spoken for.

So where we're at now, these orders still need to be paid for. I'll be working to pack them up and get shipping quotes and finally issuing invoices to the customers. If any orders don't get paid - I'll put the sensors back up for sale.

For those of you who missed out and still want to purchase the Zombie
Sensor - please e-mail me at rwb134@gmail.com and I'll put you on the
waiting list. This will be very helpful to know how many more sensors to
make. So if you want one, please don't be shy. Thanks again everyone!
Unfortunately we're experiencing delays. I know there's a lot of you who are wanting to get your hands on some of the items we've shown here, but please bear with me. I had ordered a new programmer that's not working properly (had hoped this would speed up the process) - working now to get this solved. Plus the time I can devote to these projects has been really sparse due to other personal responsibilities. In the meantime I appreciate your patience.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801922720835440837.post-47535505601776759722014-08-20T21:00:00.002-07:002014-08-20T21:00:43.812-07:00Zombie Sensor MKII

After much trial and error, I've finally put together a TRAINING VIDEO that goes over virtually ALL of the nifty cool features of the brand spanking new ZOMBIE SENSOR MARK II!!! I've worked long and hard getting the software ready and it seems like all of the bugs are worked out of it. We used these sensors at the 2014 TAGFEST this past July. After much play-testing, I found ways to improve the operation. The biggest challenge was finding a way to change modes of several of these sensors at once. And thanks to Ryan "Izzy" Bales's genius suggestion, I now have a fantastic method for controlling several Zombie Sensors at the same time.

So sit back with your favorite brew and enjoy the next 45 MINUTES for an in-depth look at the new ZOMBIE SENSOR MARK II. Keep the lights on, because the zombies are coming...
Back from TagFest 2014 this year and it was awesome! We were at a new location this year that did not disappoint. If you ever have the opportunity to attend a TagFest, you need to do so at least once in your life. We played so many games, both conventional and unconventional - some involving a golf cart to act as a tank and other great night games called "THING", "WEREWOLVES", and of course "ZOMBIES"!
Now that I'm back home safe and sound, I'm working to update and improve the software code for both the NOMAD and the Zombie sensors. Both devices got serious play action and I've discovered things that need to be updated. I've gotten a lot of sale requests for both items, and believe me, I want to start taking orders. However the improvements that need to be made are too important. So please be patient. This is a hobby of mine and I'm doing all of this in my spare time. Huge thanks of course to Dustin Westaby who has helped design the hardware and PCB, and Ryan "Izzy" Bales who is assisting me now with some software optimization. At TagFest 2014 this year, we'll be making, for the first time, some of our products available for sale!

First up is the new Zombie Sensor MKII! I'll have about 50 of these and can be purchase for $15 each. These sensors can be operated in three modes and can accept tags from LTTO, LTX and LTAR while rejecting beacon noise. Mega Tags does multiple points worth of damage, depending on the mode you're playing. We will be play testing these at night, so if you're in the area, come by and check them out!

We will also be selling prototypes of the long awaited NOMAD MKII this year! The NOMAD is a portable, hand-held hosting unit for LTTO/LTX & LTAR games. These will be fully functional units but they are still prototypes since we are still putting the final touches on the final case design/engineering. The NOMAD prototypes will be on sale for the special TagFest price of $100. However we will only have about 5 of them on hand. The final product, when they are ready, will be sold for $175. Users who get the prototype and want to upgrade them to the final case design will have this option. The cost for this upgrade has yet to be determined.

All items will ONLY be sold to TagFest participants.
Meaning the LTAR and the LTTO gear will each receive tags from each other! This opens the door up to even more great customizable games. This video demonstrates how it works.
I know this blog has been quiet, but I have been VERY busy working out the kinks on the latest Zombie sensor AND the new NOMAD MkII. And I must say for the NOMAD, this little device is simply AMAZING! I can't wait to show it off to you all.

What is the NOMAD? It's a portable, hand-held device that can be used for hosting LTTO, LTX and LTAR games without needing to be attached to a computer. It does hosting and a ton of extra features crammed into a tiny unit. Think of it as the Lazer Tag GameMaster's Swiss Army Knife. Yes, it's been a long wait, but trust me, it will be worth it.

Much thanks to Dustin Westaby who has been designing the new PCB that will go into this. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. We've got the new case picked out and we need to make some test assemblies to make sure everything will work as planned. I will be showing it off at TagFest this year. So if you plan to attend, you can see in action.

Stay tuned. Great things ahead!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801922720835440837.post-43929985662568754382014-04-09T10:53:00.001-07:002014-04-09T10:56:09.480-07:00PODCAST!

One of the great things about working on the Arduino platform is having access to a TON of help on the internet. When I started these projects over a year ago, I really knew nothing about programming and hardware. I only had a vision and a passion to make certain devices that would be compatible with the Lazer Tag gear I'm so heavily invested in. So I searched the web and taught myself through many of the great on-line tutorials recources that's out there.

One great place I stumbled across is Open Source Hardware Group (OSHG). They have a series of podcasts that really open my mind to the world of OSH and what's possible. A month ago, I originally contacted Michael (who heads up OSHG) to give him a guest suggestion for his show and mentioned some of the stuff I'm working on here at LT-MMO. And as such, he wanted to learn more about what I did here and Lazer Tag and felt it would make a great podcast. That podcast has now been posted.

Thank Mike for the interview and all you've done there at OSHG. There's always something new to learn on Mike's site. He has a great video series on learning the Arduino. Do yourself a favor and check out his site.

Even thought it's been quite here on my blog, I've been busily working on updating all of my projects
- which has been actually pretty intense. So I'd thought I'd take a quick timeout from coding on the Arduino to bring everyone up to speed.

ZOMBIE SENSOR - This project has been known as the FERAL IR SENSOR - it will get a formal name change soon. Last summer the "Mark I" version was used extensively at TagFest. I've been working on some updates to help improve upon the "Mark I" and it's looking really nice. I'll be making an announcement soon about this, along with a video to show off what's different.

ECHO BASE - While this device didn't get used at last TagFest, there's a lot of potential here. I've been improving the design and overhauling the code. The big addition I'm adding are RF radios to the devices so it can communicate with a central "hub" or "scoreboard" so people know which teams own which bases - and hopefully, for how long.

NOMAD - This is where I've been working the most this past week - updating the NOMAD code. This project is massive with over 2,600 lines of code! I had a major breakthrough this past week, re-writing the section that receives IR information. It is now MUCH more reliable. I plan on integrating this new code back into the ECHO BASE and the ZOMBIE SENSOR. The NOMAD has a lot more work ahead. If I can get everything running the way I'm envisioning it, the NOMAD is going to be really awesome. I can't wait to show it off - but first things first: work overtime to get the basics nailed down!

FUTURE PROJECTS - My brain is always chugging out ideas, especially when I come across something really cool and useful such as this little gem - the CMUcam5 Pixy! If I get the time, I want to see if I can turn this into an automatic Lazer Tag Sentry Gun. Very doable from my point of view.

So that's a quick rundown on where I'm at. Stay tuned! Great things are ahead!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801922720835440837.post-16624297268962907582014-03-24T09:57:00.001-07:002014-03-24T09:57:43.042-07:00TAGFEST 2014!!!The dates for TagFest 2014 has been set for July 10 - 12 near Eugene Oregon. The entire first batch of the Feral IR Sensors Mk-I has been purchased. The funds from this sale will be put back into making another batch soon. If you're interested in owning a few of these, please post here (along with an estimated quantity) so we can gauge the demand. This will help us to know how many to make. Thanks everyone for your support!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801922720835440837.post-43117396808716183192013-12-03T20:30:00.000-08:002013-12-03T20:30:25.698-08:00Feral IR Sensor MK-I, 18 UNITS FOR SALE!

I know it's been a long wait, but I'm now selling off the first batch of Feral IR Sensors Mark-I. These are the same sensors used in TagFest 2013 this past summer and used for night zombie games. I only have 18 of these and I'm going to sell the entire lot for $216 to one lucky person. That comes to $12 a unit! The money will be re-invested back into LT-MMO. Yes, I'm still alive here. Life just has me busy with other things, but I still want to keep the LT-MMO dream alive and create more cool Lazer Tag gadgets.

The first person that e-mails me with the intention to purchase the lot (see the video above for the e-mail address) will get the first shot to purchase all 18 units. I will send that person a PayPal invoice for $216. If after 24 hours no payment has been made, I'll then cancel the invoice and send a new invoice to the next person who wants to purchase the lot. If I have no takers over a two week period, I'll then sell them individually. If there's high demand for these items, we'll see about making more units.

Please understand, these sensors are made as a hobby and I cannot offer any returns nor technical support. However each unit has been tested to be in good working condition. Shipping is included, but I'll only ship to inside the USA. If you have any questions, post it here and I'll do my best to answer them.

Good luck!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801922720835440837.post-84271697107296928252013-08-02T14:09:00.000-07:002013-08-02T18:25:10.834-07:00Back To RealityTagFest was an absolute blast. The Feral IR Sensor was a huge hit. The picture above is us using the sensors for one of our many night Zombie games which worked really well.
The NOMAD hosted several games, but there's still more work that needs to be done to the software. The Echo Base had some hardware issues and didn't see much action. However, it was great to field test these gadgets to learn how to make them better.

Unfortunately all LT-MMO projects will need to be put on hold for a while so I can play catch-up with several personal family responsibilities. Keep in mind, everything here is a hobby. Once I'm able to secure more free time, I'll be back. Thank you all for your patience.
We've been busy getting our devices ready for TagFest which starts on July 19th in Eugene Oregon. At the event we'll be demoing all three gadgets, the Echo Base, Feral IR Sensor and the Nomad.

The Echo Base microcontroller is giving me troubles - I'm hoping to have this fixed in time. I'm looking forward to the interesting games these devices will give us.

The Feral IR Sensors are running perfectly. I'll have 30 units on hand for us to play test and perhaps even sell at the event. Very much looking forward using these at night for those dark Zombie games!

And the NOMAD, portable hosting station, will also be making it's first public appearance. The picture here is the current design. I'll hopefully have time to take pictures. Look for updates after the event. Exciting stuff!
